About the People
The majority of the Panamanian Chinese are followers
of traditional Chinese religion, although their core beliefs are
often animistic. The extent of their lostness is shown in their fear
of evil spirits and many superstitions. Many are working in small
retail shops (called super-minis) and restaurants with about 50 percent of the
target population arriving from China since 2000. Their drive for
success makes them a relatively wealthy ethnic group in the Americas
but they still suffer from spiritual poverty.
Translations of the
Bible already exist in their languages. The largest segment of the
population speaks Hakka, but no Hakka language churches exist at
this time. Only a few Great Commission Christian organizations are
focusing on reaching the Chinese in Latin America. If successful
strategies are developed to reach Chinese in Panama, they will
hopefully be adapted to reach other Chinese communities throughout
the Americas.
