Nativity Scenes
Back

Several years ago, in an effort to restore the religious nature of Christmas to the public's attention, Messiah Project began placing nativity sets throughout the city during the holiday season. Each year the collection has expanded, especially with the inclusion of several interpretations of nativity scenes from other nations. Among the original nativity scenes in the Messiah Project Nativity Collection are "The Holy Family," a lovely wood sculpture created by Springfield artist Stan Maples and scenes adapted from traditional nativities from Poland, Austria, China, Africa, Japan, and Bulgaria.

If you have driven through the intersection of National and Chestnut Expressway, you may have noticed the transformation of a drab grain elevator into a colorful collage of figures. If you look closely, you will find in the center of those figures the Nativity of the Ages: Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child, surrounded by peoples from all nations and all ages. The original concept was created by artist Obie Harrup of the Dalesco Group, then recreated as a 50' by 70' mural by artist Farley Lewis.

We encourage visual artists to share their gifts with the community by creating original displays or interpretations of traditional or international nativity scenes. As we continue to bring before the public the symbols of our faith, we remember that our true reason for celebration is the One who came to give us life!

If you would be interested in displaying one of the nativity scenes at your business or home, please contact us.
